Nine Months Into Locksmithing What I Wish I Knew About Locks and Security

Nine months into locksmithing, the biggest shock is not the physical graft. It is the amount of knowledge hidden behind words that sound simple.


A customer says, “It’s just a lock.”


Then the door tells a different story.


It might be a 5 lever mortice deadlock that needs to meet insurance requirements. It might be a euro cylinder with no snap protection sitting in a multipoint strip that has dropped out of alignment. It might be a split spindle setup where one wrong assumption turns a simple handle change into a callback. It might be a night latch, a rim cylinder, a gearbox, a hook case, a keep problem, a failed centre case, or a door that has been slowly moving for years.


When I first started, I knew very little. I probably did not even know how little I knew. I was gullible in the way most beginners are. I thought learning to open and change locks was the trade. What I have learned is that opening and changing locks is only one small part of it.


The real trade is diagnosis, standards, product knowledge, door behaviour, security grading, customer communication, and knowing when a “quick fix” will create a bigger problem.

Locksmithing looks simple until the door is in front of you


Before getting into the trade, it is easy to think locksmithing is a list of neat jobs.


Change a lock. Open a door. Fit a cylinder. Replace a handle. Adjust a mechanism.


Then real doors turn up.


A lock is rarely sitting in perfect conditions. It is fitted into a door that may be swollen, dropped, twisted, misaligned, worn, abused, badly installed, painted over, forced, adjusted badly, or fitted with the wrong part years earlier. A lock also has to match the customer’s needs. That could mean convenience, insurance compliance, fire safety, access control, security upgrades, or all of those at once.


That is where a rookie locksmith starts to realise the trade is not just about tools. It is about judgement.


The early learning curve is steep because every “lock” branches into more questions:


  • What type is it?

  • What size is it?

  • What standard should it meet?

  • What failed first?

  • What else has been damaged because of that failure?

  • Can it be repaired properly?

  • Is the customer asking for security or just for the door to shut?

  • Will the new part work with the existing door, keeps, handles, spindle, and furniture?


Miss one detail and the job changes.


The customer sees the front of the lock. The locksmith has to understand everything behind it.


Mortice locks teach you that names are not enough


Mortice locks are one of the first areas where the trade becomes wider than expected.


Someone might say they have a mortice lock, but that does not tell you enough. You need to know whether it is a sashlock or deadlock, the case size, backset, centres, forend shape, bolt throw, handing where relevant, and the security level.


Then come the levers.


A 2 lever or 3 lever lock might be common on internal doors or low-security applications. A 5 lever lock is often the level people recognise for external timber doors. Higher lever counts exist too, and the number alone still does not tell the whole story. The lock design, keyway, build quality, bolt strength, certification, and fitting all matter.


The real lesson is this:


A lock can look “about right” and still be wrong in every way that matters.

That is especially true when insurance comes into the conversation. Many customers say they need a “British Standard lock” without knowing what that means. In the UK, external door insurance requirements often refer to recognised standards such as BS 3621 for certain types of locks. CE or UKCA marking may also appear on products, but marking and insurance suitability are not the same thing.


That is a key point for new locksmiths. Do not guess. Read the lock. Check the markings. Understand what the customer needs. If an insurer has specified a standard, the fitted lock must meet that requirement, not just look strong.


Mortice sizing is its own language


The first time measuring mortice locks properly can feel slow. Case depth, backset, centres, forend length, forend width, faceplate shape, and keep compatibility all matter.


A few millimetres can create a pile of trouble:


  • The handle no longer lines up cleanly.

  • The key drags in the keyhole.

  • The bolt rubs the keep.

  • The door needs more timber removed than it should.

  • The lock looks fitted, but feels rough every time it operates.


Good locksmithing often looks boring because the measurements are right. Bad measuring only becomes obvious once everything is half fitted and the door will not behave.


Cylinders are a small part with a big security job


Euro cylinders and oval cylinders look simple compared with a gearbox or full multipoint strip, but they carry a lot of responsibility.


A basic euro cylinder can lock and unlock the door, but that does not mean it offers the level of protection the door deserves. Cylinder attacks are well known, which is why features such as anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pull, anti-pick, and anti-bump protection matter.


Then the star ratings come in.


A 1 star cylinder can form part of a secure setup when paired correctly with approved 2 star security furniture. A 3 star cylinder is designed to offer a higher level of protection within the cylinder itself. The exact product and certification matter, not just the words on the packet.


The details that catch beginners are often practical ones:


  • Is it a euro profile or oval profile?

  • Is it key and key, key and thumbturn, or single sided?

  • What is the internal and external measurement?

  • Is it sitting proud of the handle?

  • Does the cam operate smoothly?

  • Does the customer need keyed alike cylinders?

  • Is the cylinder suitable for the door type and use?


A cylinder that sticks out too far can weaken the whole setup. A thumbturn in the wrong place can create a security issue. A cheap replacement might solve today’s lockout but leave the customer with poor protection.


The best lesson here is to stop thinking of cylinders as “30/30, 35/45, job done.” The size matters, but the security rating, application, and furniture matter just as much.

Multipoint mechanisms are where the learning curve gets steep


Multipoint locks can humble anyone.


From the outside, a customer may say the handle is stiff or the door will not lock. Behind that sentence could be a failed gearbox, worn followers, broken springs, stripped screws, dropped hinges, misaligned keeps, a warped door, a damaged cylinder cam, or a strip that no longer matches the door’s movement.


The centre case is one part of the story. The full strip is another.


You need to know what you are looking at:


  • Rollers

  • Mushrooms

  • Deadbolts

  • Hooks

  • Twin hooks

  • Shootbolts

  • Latch and deadbolt combinations

  • Auto-locking mechanisms

  • Non-auto mechanisms


Hooks bring their own questions. Which way do they throw? Do they engage upwards, downwards, or in pairs? Are the keeps correct? Has someone adjusted the keeps to mask a hinge problem? Is the door compressing properly against the frame?


Then there is the spindle setup.


A single spindle arrangement behaves differently from a split spindle or dual spindle setup. If the handles are offset or designed to work differently from each side, the wrong replacement can cause confusion fast. A customer may expect the outside handle to be dead until the key is used. Another setup may allow lever operation from both sides. Fit the wrong handle or misunderstand the gearbox and the door no longer works the way the customer expects.


Gearboxes are not universal


One of the biggest beginner mistakes is assuming a gearbox is close enough because it looks similar.


It might not be.


The brand, case dimensions, backset, PZ centres, spindle size, follower type, fixing positions, faceplate, and connection points to the strip can all matter. Some gearboxes are available as like-for-like replacements. Some require matching the full strip. Some older units are obsolete, which means you need a proper repair plan rather than optimism.


Quality also matters. Fitting the cheapest part can create future trouble if the door is heavy, high use, or already out of alignment.


A good question on multipoint jobs is not just “What part has failed?” It is “Why did that part fail?”


If the door has been forced shut for months, the mechanism may have been under stress every day. Replace the gearbox without correcting the alignment and the new one may fail early. The customer will see that as a bad part or a bad locksmith. The real cause may have been the door all along.


Rim locks and night latches are more varied than they first appear


Rim cylinders and night latches seem straightforward until you start seeing the variations.


There are basic night latches, deadlocking night latches, rollerbolt night latches, auto-deadlocking units, and higher-security versions. Some are common on timber front doors. Some appear on apartment doors. Some are paired with mortice deadlocks for insurance or added security.


Then there are size differences. The common backsets are not interchangeable without affecting how the latch sits, how the strike lines up, and how the door closes. A replacement that looks nearly right on the shelf may leave the latch nose sitting badly in the keep.


Security level matters here too. A basic night latch may offer convenience, but not enough protection as the only lock on an external door. A deadlocking version can improve security, but only when fitted and used correctly. Fire safety and escape requirements also need care, especially in flats and shared buildings.


The rule I have learned is simple. Do not treat rim hardware as old-fashioned or basic. It still needs proper identification, careful fitting, and a clear explanation to the customer.


Cam locks, digital locks, and wall mounts add another layer


Just when the main door locks start to make sense, smaller locks and access products appear.


Cam locks have a huge range of sizes, cam shapes, fixing methods, key types, and body lengths. They turn up on cabinets, meters, cupboards, lockers, letterboxes, filing units, and panels. Many look similar until you measure them. Then you realise the cam offset, rotation, body diameter, and fixing method decide whether it works.


Digital combination locks bring other issues. Some are mechanical keypad locks. Some are electronic. Some suit light internal use. Some are designed for gates or external use. Some allow code changes easily. Others are awkward, worn, or badly fitted.


Wall-mounted key safes and lock boxes also vary in build quality and security level. They should not be treated as all the same. A cheap unit on show outside a property is very different from a tested product fitted in a sensible position.


This part of the trade teaches a useful habit. Always ask where the lock is being used, who will use it, how often it will be used, and what happens if it fails.


A lock on a rarely used cupboard has a different risk profile from a communal entrance or an external key safe.

Standards and paperwork are part of the job


When training starts, it is tempting to focus only on physical skills. Picking, decoding, drilling, fitting, opening, replacing. Those skills matter, but standards and paperwork protect both the customer and the locksmith.


Customers often do not know what they have. They may say:


  • “It needs to be insurance approved.”

  • “The police told me to upgrade it.”

  • “The last locksmith said it was British Standard.”

  • “It has a kite mark, I think.”

  • “The landlord wants a certificate.”


The job is to separate assumption from fact.


For locks, look for clear product markings and recognised standards. For cylinders and security furniture, understand star ratings and how products work together. For fire doors and flats, be cautious. A lock change must not create an unsafe escape route or compromise a fire-rated door assembly.


This is especially important when the customer pushes for the cheapest fix. Cheap can be fine when the application is low risk and the customer understands the limits. Cheap is not fine when it leaves an external door below a required standard or creates a safety problem.


A short explanation at the door can save a dispute later.


For example:


“The lock I can fit here will secure the door, but it is not a British Standard 5 lever lock. If your insurer requires that, we need to fit the correct standard, not just any mortice lock.”


That kind of sentence builds trust. It also shows the difference between swapping parts and giving professional advice.


Bypass knowledge needs responsibility


Every locksmith learns quickly that failures are not always solved by the obvious route.


A key may not turn. A gearbox may be jammed. A latch may be stuck. A cylinder may be damaged. A mechanism may be locked in the frame. A customer may be outside with shopping, or inside with a door that will not open.


This is where bypass knowledge becomes part of the craft. It is also where responsibility matters.


There is a big difference between understanding a weakness so you can help an authorised customer and throwing techniques around carelessly. The trade depends on trust. Good locksmiths protect methods, check authority, respect property, and choose the least damaging route when possible.


The bigger lesson is that bypassing is not one skill. It is diagnosis under pressure.


Before attacking the job, slow down:


  • Confirm the customer has authority.

  • Identify the lock family and door type.

  • Listen to what happened before failure.

  • Test the handle, key, latch, and door movement carefully.

  • Look for alignment issues.

  • Decide whether the fault is in the cylinder, lock case, gearbox, strip, keeps, or door.

  • Plan the least destructive route.


Sometimes one careful move saves the job. Sometimes the wrong move destroys parts that could have been saved.


That is the line between improving and guessing.


Brands have habits and doors have history


One thing that only comes with time is recognising patterns.


Certain brands fail in familiar ways. Some gearboxes wear at known points. Some mechanisms dislike poor alignment. Some older parts become awkward because replacements are limited. Some doors always seem to drop on the hinge side or bind at the same place.


No course can teach every pattern. You build that knowledge job by job.


A strong habit is to take notes after awkward jobs. Not customer private details, just the useful technical points:


  • Lock type

  • Brand if known

  • Measurements

  • Fault symptoms

  • What fixed it

  • What wasted time

  • What part would have helped

  • Any warning signs to spot next time


Photos also help, as long as they are taken responsibly and do not expose private information. A picture of a gearbox, strip, keep alignment, or label can save hours later when ordering parts or checking compatibility.


The trade rewards memory, but it rewards organised memory even more.


Stock control is harder than it sounds


At first, it feels sensible to carry everything. Then the van starts filling up with parts that are almost right but not quite.


The better approach is to build stock around real jobs and common failures in your area. Nationwide patterns exist, but local housing stock matters. Older timber doors, uPVC estates, composite doors, flats, new builds, student lets, and commercial units all create different demand.


A practical starter stock might include:


  • Common euro cylinder sizes in sensible security levels

  • A range of 5 lever mortice sashlocks and deadlocks

  • Common night latches and rim cylinders

  • Popular gearbox sizes and configurations

  • Common handles, spindles, screws, and keeps

  • Repair plates and packers

  • Measuring tools and labelling supplies


Stock is not just about having parts. It is about knowing what you have, what it fits, and when not to use it.


The dangerous box in the van is the one full of “might fit” parts. That box can cost more in time and reputation than it saves.


The customer pays for judgement, not just a fitted part


Customers often judge the job by whether the door works at the end. That is fair, but the locksmith knows there is more going on.


A good job includes:


  • Correct identification

  • Correct security level

  • Clean fitting

  • Smooth operation

  • Sensible advice

  • No avoidable damage

  • Clear pricing

  • A realistic explanation of future risk


If the door is badly aligned, say so. If the mechanism is worn, explain it. If the customer chooses a budget part, make the limits clear. If a repair is temporary, call it temporary.


This is not about scaring people into upgrades. It is about leaving them with the truth.


One sentence I wish I had understood earlier is:


The best locksmiths do not just make the door lock. They make the whole door make sense.


That means door, frame, lock, cylinder, handles, keeps, user behaviour, and security level all line up.


Training never really stops


Typing “how do i start becoming a locksmith” into a search bar is easy. Becoming useful at the door is the hard part.


Training courses can give a foundation. Tool practice helps. Product catalogues help. Manufacturer instructions help. Videos can help. Working alongside experienced locksmiths helps even more. But none of it replaces time on real doors under real conditions.


The danger after a few months is thinking confidence means competence. Sometimes confidence is just familiarity with a few common jobs.


A better mindset is to stay curious:


  • Read product markings instead of guessing.

  • Measure twice, especially when tired.

  • Keep old failed parts and study them.

  • Ask why a mechanism failed.

  • Learn standards properly.

  • Practise clean fitting, not just fast fitting.

  • Build a network of locksmiths who take the trade seriously.

  • Be honest when a job is outside current skill level.


There is no shame in not knowing everything at nine months. There is shame in pretending and damaging a customer’s door because pride got in the way.

What I would tell myself on day one


If I could go back to the start, I would not tell myself to buy more tools first. Tools matter, but knowledge decides how those tools get used.


I would say this.


Learn lock families properly. Mortice, cylinder, rim, multipoint, cam, digital, and access hardware all have their own rules.


Learn measurements until they become second nature. Backset, centres, case size, cylinder length, faceplate, spindle, handing, bolt throw, and keep position all matter.


Learn security standards early. Do not wait until a customer asks about insurance to understand British Standard locks, star-rated cylinders, and approved furniture combinations.


Learn door alignment. Many lock failures start with the door, hinges, keeps, or frame.


Learn to explain options clearly. Customers do not need a lecture, but they do need to know the difference between a cheap fix, a proper repair, and a security upgrade.


Learn restraint. Just because a method might open something does not mean it is the right first choice.


Learn from every bad job. The ones that make you sweat are often the ones that teach the most.

Nine months is enough to know this trade is serious


After nine months, I feel more grounded than I did at the start. I can see progress. I can also see how much more there is to learn.


That is the strange part of locksmithing. The more you learn, the bigger the trade becomes.


At first, you see locks. Then you see mechanisms. Then you see door systems. Then you see standards, failure patterns, security levels, customer expectations, safety issues, and the cost of small mistakes.


It is not easy. But most worthwhile trades are not easy.


A good locksmith is part technician, part problem solver, part security adviser, and part calm voice when someone is locked out, worried, or dealing with a failed door. The job asks for practical hands and a careful head.


Nine months in, the biggest lesson is simple: never underestimate the lock, the door, or the trade. There is always another mechanism, another standard, another brand habit, and another way a simple job can teach you something.
